Resolve SSL Trust Errors When Connecting To Exchange Server in Outlook 2013

In the present arena, data security is an important factor which has been taken into consideration at a large scale. On talking about Exchange Server environment both; server-server and client – server network communication is involved. In order to provide security to these network connections SSL certificates are used. The main purpose of SSL certificate is to secure the protocols like; SMTP, HTTP, IMAP and POP.

Reasons and Workarounds For SSL Trust Errors

SSL trust issues are common issue and can be tackled by knowing the right cause of occurrence. Some of the SSL errors and the solutions to overcome them are described here to help fix Outlook 2013 SSL trust errors when connecting to Exchange Server:

1). Validity Period Of The Certificate

Each certificate is provided with an expiry date. Therefore, there is only a limited date range within which the certificate can be used. The expiry date of the SSL certificate depends on the basis on which the certificate has been issued.

In most of the cases a certificate provided by Microsoft Exchange Server is valid for a period of 5 years. However, the certificates that are issued from the private authorities may last for a longer duration. Moreover, a commercial certificate lasts for just one year.

If a SSL certificate expires then you will not be able to perform secure transactions. The only solution to overcome with the issue of expired certificate is to get it renewed.

NOTE: If your SSL certificate is on the verge of expiry then you will get a prompt on the screen to renew the certificate from the Certification Authority (CA).

2).Trusted Certificate Authority

On configuring Outlook to access Server, if you receive an error message indicating that there is an issue with Server’s Security authority then it reflects that the security certificate is not from a trusted certifying authority and thus you will unable to connect to the server.

This will continue until you trust a certificate issuer by simply adding the desired certificate to the Trusted Root Certification Authorities or by replacing the certificate that has been purchased from a trusted authority.

Trust The Issuer

In order to trust an issuer you need to perform the following steps:

NOTE: Always use trusted SSL certificate to avoid security issues.

STEP1. Click on view certificate.

STEP2. Install certificate in order to proceed further.

STEP3. Click on browse for selecting Trusted Root Certification Authority.

Moving of Certificate

If a certificate is present on your local machine but is not added to the list of Trusted Root Certification Authority, then you can simply move it to the list. For moving the certificate, you can type certmgr.msc in the Run command and press enter.

3). Incorrect Server Or Domain Name

One of the issue with the SSL certificate is the mismatch of the Server or domain name that the user is connecting to the name on the certificate. As per the configuration of the server there can be a requirement to add several names on the SSL certificate. A SSL certificate can include any number of names on it. But for the proper functioning you can add a maximum of 50 names.

Conclusion

In Exchange Server security SSL certification plays the vital role. They are designed in order to protect the Exchange Server environment from any foreign attack. However, sometimes there can be some issues with the SSL certificate. Therefore, the certificate needs to be checked from time to time. If you find any issue with the certificate try to mend it at that moment itself. The solutions to fix the issues related SSL certificates are simple and can easily be carried out.
